Chinese Myths – Medicinal God

In China… If people pray for good health, they will pray to the Medicinal God. Who is the Medicinal God in China?

More than 1800 years ago, there was a doctor with superior medical skills in China, called Hua Tuo.

It is said that Hua Tuo was the first doctor to use anesthesia for surgery.
(“Anesthesia” is a word from Greek “without sensation“)

Hua Tuo used a general anaesthetic combining wine with a herbal concoction called mafeisan (麻沸散; literally “cannabis boil powder”). (From Wikipedia)

Unfortunately, the formula of mafeisan is lost.

He is also proficient in acupuncture to cure diseases. (Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in which thin needles are inserted into the body. See more Wikipedia)

In addition to saving lives and treating diseases, he also anticipated the importance of keeping good health. So Huo Tuo invented a set of healthy exercises called “Five Animal Frolics“.

The exercises that were inspired by the movements of the tiger, the deer, the bear, the monkey and the crane can improve one’s health.

After the death of Hua Tuo, the Chinese acknowledged him as a medicinal god to honor his superb medical skills. So there is a term in Chinese called “Hua Tuo reincarnated” for people to praise highly skilled and respectful medical doctors. (See more Hua Tuo)

Um … my dear,

Dr.Hua Tuo passed away thousands of years ago.
